The study continued for over five years, and the candidates were monitored. Toward the end of the study, researchers found that the risk of developing dementia depends on vitamin D deficiency.
If a patient had substantial vitamin D deficiency, he or she would be at a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. Even though low vitamin D levels in the body are known to increase the risk of dementia, the exact causes are unknown. Researchers are still trying to figure out how vitamin D deficiency increases the chances of one getting dementia or Alzheimer’s. Even though it has been established that the deficiency of vitamin D can increase the risk of dementia by 50 percent, there is still a long way to go.
Researchers are working on determining how vitamin D levels affect dementia and Alzheimer’s. However, the studies conducted did clear up one aspect: if you already have dementia or Alzheimer’s, consuming vitamin D will not help cure the disease. But you should maintain a steady intake in order to prevent the disease. Do keep in mind that you should not consume more than 10,000 IU of vitamin D in a day.
