Is weight loss yogurt really a thing or should you ignore these types of claims as marketing hype? As it turns out, there may be more to it than you initially think. It may sound like a bit of a stretch, but preliminary research is suggesting that there may be something to the claims dairy companies are making about their products.
Should You Eat Weight Loss Yogurt?
According to WebMD, by including yogurt in your diet, you may be boosting your body’s weight loss capacity. This food may help to give your metabolism a bit of a bump to help speed up your fat burning. A recent study cited by WebMD indicates that it may also help to shrink the fat around our tummy area.
In the study, researchers determined that adults with obesity who consumed three servings of fat-free yogurt daily were able to achieve better weight loss than those who didn’t. In fact, they lost 22 percent more weight and 61 percent more body fat than those who only cut calories but who didn’t focus on keeping up their calcium levels. Moreover, the participants in the yogurt eating group also lost 81 percent more belly fat than those who were in the calorie reduction-only group.
This Dairy Product May Assist in Losing Weight in a Quality Way
The research showed that yogurt could help with weight loss but that there were other benefits as well. The average participant eating this dairy product lost 14 pounds throughout the length of the research. That said, they were also about twice as effective in lean muscle mass maintenance, according to Michael Zemel, PhD, one of the researchers and a nutrition professor at the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Zemel underscored the importance of lean muscle mass maintenance during weight loss, as many dieters can burn through muscle instead of fat but not know the difference on a bathroom scale. Muscle is important for strength as well as burning calories. That said, it is often reduced during weight loss. This was not as much the case among dieters who were eating yogurt.
The outcomes of this research were published in a paper in the International Journal of Obesity. This only added to a rising body of evidence that a combination of protein and calcium as is found in low-fat dairy products like yogurt can help support the body’s fat burning and weight loss.
