Generally, people assume their veins will start bulging after they have been bodybuilding. Even most professional bodybuilders don’t have a clear idea of why this happens and whether or not it’s something they should worry about or boast about. Given that this phenomenon occurs frequently, it is surprising to see that not much information about it has been shared commonly, as a result of which there are many myths about why veins pop out as a result of bodybuilding.
To start off, it is important to dispel the myth that the reasons why the veins start popping out is that the weight training places excess stress on the blood vessels. Neither is this caused by new veins appearing in the body.
The circulatory system does face more strain than usual when you are bodybuilding but that is not the reason why the veins become more prominent. To put it simply, the root cause of why veins pop out has actually little or no relation with the veins themselves.
Let’s take a few probable factors which contribute to this:
When you work out, the body has to pump more oxygen to the muscles you are working on. As a result, the muscle matter surrounding the veins is affected by the exercise. This is where the role of the blood plasma is crucial. When you exercise, the plasma from your blood is transported into the muscles. Due to this, the muscles start hardening and eventually swell up. The muscles themselves are swelling up, so they place additional pressure on the inset venous tissue. The tissue is eventually pushed to the surface and is directly under the skin.
Now, as you keep working out, the pressure on the tissue increases. The tissue is right at the surface of the muscles and now it starts pushing against the skin. This is when it starts becoming apparent and the effect is that your veins pop out. Contrary to popular perception though, this has no effect on the actual functioning of the veins themselves. They continue performing their role.
The age-old idea that the veins start popping out because of blood pressure is wrong. Exercise actually improves the flow of blood throughout the body and the muscles, so there is no reason why the veins would pop out. However, do keep in mind that this can also be a symptom of a health problem, such as heart disease. So, if your veins pop out, it is a good idea to consult a doctor about the probable causes.
